At present there are various diet methods that can be tried. Two of which are being discussed are the keto diet and the detox diet. The question is, which is really effective for weight loss?
What is the keto diet and the detox diet?
Previously, let’s get to know both of these diet methods. The ketogenic diet or keto is a low-fat, high-fat diet. Simply put, this diet method makes a person limit carbohydrate intake and replace it with fat.
Thus, the body will be in a condition called ketosis. The body will burn more fat to be converted into energy. This method is claimed to reduce weight and reduce the risk of various diseases, such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.
Meanwhile, a detox diet or a detox is a diet by consuming only fruits and vegetables, avoiding fats and carbohydrates, and limiting processed foods. Called detoxification, because with this method it is hoped that the digestive organs can be ‘fasted’ from substances that are harmful to the body.
What are the side effects of both?
Both the keto diet and the detox diet have their advantages and disadvantages. By reducing carbohydrate intake, those who implement the keto diet will experience significant weight loss without having to feel excessive hunger because of the high fat composition.
However, this diet is not entirely safe when applied by those who have diabetes or endocrine disease because it can cause hypoglycemia (blood sugar levels drop dramatically). In addition, if a source of unhealthy fat is consumed (saturated fat), it can actually increase the risk of heart disease.
Likewise with a detox diet. This diet is good because it is high in fiber and can prevent the intake of processed foods which tend to contain lots of preservatives, colorings, and artificial sweeteners.
However, this diet will cause fatigue and lack of macronutrients such as protein and fat. Detox dieters are also prone to anemia due to iron deficiency.
So which is more effective?
So far, there is no scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness and safety of the two methods.
Both of them do promise weight loss, but there are side effects behind the benefits, namely the lack of certain nutrients. If this is left for a long time, it will be bad for the body as a whole.
Therefore, you should still consult with a nutritionist before starting to apply one of these diet methods.
In fact, the safest thing to do to lose excess weight is a combination of diet and regular physical activity. No problem consuming carbohydrates or protein, as long as it is still within the normal range needed by the body.
Perform routine physical activity three to five times per week for at least thirty minutes. Thus, not only does your weight go down, your body will be fitter.
Get to know the keto diet and the detox diet before applying it. And most importantly, apply a healthy lifestyle as a whole so that you can get the ideal body weight and a healthy body at the same time.
